On the occasion of the release of their EP "Escape Lane", the indie rock band Sink Deeper called upon Distrolution Merch for the design of their Digipack CDs. To learn more about the band's latest news, we invite you to discover our interview below!
Hi Sink Deeper! Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions! Can you introduce your band to our readers?
Hi, thank you. We're Sink Deeper, a Clermont-Ferrand band active since 2020. We can define our music as post-punk or indie rock. We are 4 guys: guitar, bass, drums, keyboard. We've known each other since high school and it's from that moment that we started making music together. But it's with the release of Escape Lane that the project really began.
What are your main influences?
There are many... from 80s post-punk (The Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen, Gang of Four, Joy Division...) to the 90s alternative scene (Pavement, Breeders, Pixies). As well as everything happening currently in the punk scene, whether it's from the English/Irish side (Shame, Fontaines DC, Gilla band) or French (the Flippin' Freaks label, We hate you please die...).
Your EP "Escape Lane" has been available on all platforms since March 2021. Can we revisit your writing process? Where did you find inspiration for the tracks on this EP?
We decided to make this EP during the Covid period. Dates were cancelled, we didn't really have the money or the equipment for it, but the motivation was there. We recorded the 5 tracks in a room on the third floor of a building in Langeac (43). It wasn't easy. But the goal wasn't to make something very clean, but rather to have demos, things to present to the public. To our great surprise, the recordings were rather good. So we decided to have it all mixed and mastered by professionals.
For the composition of the tracks, this is done in rehearsal. We throw out an idea for a riff, a drum line, and we compose around that. For the lyrics, they come after the composition of the instrumental part. The lyrics of the EP translate our emotions, our feelings, things that happen in our heads during often difficult moments. The EP is therefore not very joyful but not totally pessimistic. I simply think it evokes phases of anger, fear, nostalgia that everyone has certainly already experienced.
Can we talk about the artwork? What does it represent?
The photo was taken in an underground car park in Le Puy-en-Velay, the town where we were in high school. You can see a person fleeing in the distance. The image is blurry, the frame is tilted, I think it represents the themes of our songs well. Blurry, tormented lyrics, the character tries to escape from a dark environment where he feels oppressed.
On the occasion of this EP release, you called upon us for the design of your Digipack CDs. Can you tell us about your experience with Distrolution Merch?
We are very happy with our experience with you. We learned about Distrolution Merch through other punk bands, friends. And now we're the ones recommending your site to other people. We've already placed two orders with you, and we'll undoubtedly do so again for our future projects.
In general, is there a merchandise item that you attach particular importance to? If so, which one?
Vinyl! Although we don't have any. We're waiting for the album, but of course we'll make vinyl for our future releases.
Let's talk about recent news. You've had the opportunity to perform on stage several times since the beginning of the year. Since your band's creation, has there been a concert that particularly stood out to you?
Our performance at La Coopérative de mai in February during a showcase really stood out to us. Playing in this venue where we usually see great bands perform was a very nice experience. But I think we remember all our concerts very well, whether with very good memories, but also much less good ones.
What are your upcoming dates?
The next one will be at Petit Bain in Paris, alongside Mustang, Foxhole and Dragon Rapide. A 100% Clermont-Ferrand concert organised by La Coopérative de mai. It will be on 3rd June and we're really looking forward to it.
Otherwise, we're playing in Clermont-Ferrand on 11th June for Californie Française as well as on 21st June for the music festival. Then we finish on 25th June in Tence, in Haute-Loire.
The final word is yours!
Uh... See you at the concerts!
Thanks for the interview and all the best.
